In this study, three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) images of the spine and a clinical study of a patient with congenital scoliosis were used to create FE models of the L1-L5 vertebrae of the spine. In addition, three types of FE models (undeformed, patient, and Cobb angle) were constructed to assess the biomechanical effects of these deformities on the lumbar spine and to assess the segmental stability of surgical interventions. Both undeformed and FE models of the L1-L5 vertebrae of the patient with congenital scoliosis were developed. Maximum von Mises stress in the pedicle of the L4 vertebrae was 120.19 MPa, and it was located between upper and lower vertebrae at the L4/5 level. A comparison between the computed results of the stress on the pedicle of the L4 vertebrae of the patient with congenital scoliosis and the clinical data indicates that the FE model can accurately predict the von Mises stress on the pedicle.
